Life Courses in Vietnam: Exploring gendered Aspects of Careers
Ongoing
Numerous studies focus on the effects of economic reforms on the livelihoods of Vietnamese people. This study aims to add another perspective to this topic, namely that of women’s changing occupational life courses. People’s occupational life courses are constructed of several stages following upon each other during the time of a life span. These elements might be defined differently but they always include an element of transition between them. The processes of transition between different life stages of women are at the centre of this research project: How are women in Vietnam making decisions about new stages in their careers? Who influences these decisions and in which directions? How are these decisions reproducing social practices? How has decision making changed during the past years of economic transformation?
Perceptions of Change in Vietnam. Human Environmental Values in a Peri-urban Area of Southeast Vietnam
(PhD-Research, Completed)
Since the early 1990s, Vietnam is experiencing rapid economic growth, initiated by the đổi mới reforms. While these policies improved living standards for many people in Vietnam, the economic growth also intensified threats to the natural environment through rising pollution. At the same time, Vietnam faces the adverse effects of phenomena like global climate change.
Against this background, this research project looks at the cognitive aspects of human-nature relations in Vietnam: What is nature? What kind of changes do people notice in their local natural environment? How do they explain these changes? And where do they see their own responsibilities in this context? Based on fieldwork in a peri-urban hamlet in the Southeast of Vietnam, this qualitative study paints a diverse picture of the perceptions of the local natural environment.
